The Identity Gap: the distance between who we are and the stories, categories and expectations through which we are recognised. When others read us, they simplify or misread us. When it moves inside, we edit, explain or perform ourselves in advance.

    Born in Bulgaria, raised in France, twenty years in the UK, back in Paris now. In every one of those places, someone read me as the foreigner. The Circle is the room I needed then: a place to find language for what that gaze does, and to stop living by it.
